TAWAU: A motorcyclist was killed after being hit by a four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle travelling from the opposite direction in a crash at Jalan Tawau–Bombalai on Friday morning.
Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the victim, a 34-year-old local man, suffered severe injuries and was confirmed dead at the scene by Health Ministry personnel.
The 39-year-old local 4WD driver was uninjured. He was travelling from Tawau town towards Benta Wawasan, while the victim was heading from Kampung Haji Matahir to the Tawau Sports Complex.
Police received a report at about 6.20am regarding the collision involving a Toyota Hilux and a SYM BX110 motorcycle.
Initial investigations found the accident occurred around 5.35am when the 4WD allegedly attempted to overtake another vehicle by entering the opposite lane and collided with the motorcycle.
The 4WD driver will be remanded for investigation under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless or dangerous driving causing death.
Police reminded all drivers to ensure the opposite lane is clear before overtaking and stressed that strict action will be taken against negligent road users.
