TAWAU: A 34-year-old motorcyclist died after being hit by a four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicle travelling in the opposite direction in an accident along Jalan Tawau-Bombalai on Friday morning.
Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the local man suffered severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by a Ministry of Health medical officer.
He said the 39-year-old 4WD driver, also a local man, was unhurt, adding that the driver was travelling from Tawau town towards Benta Wawasan while the victim was heading from Kampung Haji Matahir to the Tawau Sports Complex.
Jasmin said police received a report on the incident at 6.20am and initial investigations found the crash occurred at about 5.35am when the Toyota Hilux was believed to have overtaken another vehicle by entering the opposite lane before colliding with a SYM BX110 motorcycle.
He said the 4WD driver would be remanded to assist investigations under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and reminded motorists to ensure the opposite lane is clear before overtaking, adding that police will not compromise on enforcement against negligent driving that results in loss of life.
