KENINGAU: A fruit storage warehouse was destroyed in a fire at Sri Jutaya, Kampung Bakiau, at about 3.11pm on Sunday.

Keningau Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) Chief Serevinus @ Mohd Nizdam Sinkui said four vehicles parked outside were also affected.

He said two Toyota Vigo vehicles were completely destroyed, while a Proton Saga and a Toyota Hiace were about 70 per cent damaged.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the 200 by 40-foot warehouse fully ablaze and immediately carried out both offensive and defensive firefighting operations.

A total of nine firefighters from BBP Keningau were deployed along with a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT), Light Fire Rescue Tender (LFRT), water tanker and Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) unit.

“Firefighting was conducted using two hose lines from the FRT Scania and two additional lines with three nozzles from the LFRT Atego over a distance of about 300 feet,” he said.

A water tanker provided continuous water supply to support operations, while an additional source was obtained from a nearby fire hydrant along the Keningau–Tenom road, causing minor traffic congestion as vehicles slowed to pass over hose ramps.

Serevinus said the structure, largely built with wood, metal grilles and zinc, posed risks including possible collapse, residual electrical supply and flammable materials.

He said Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd personnel were present to cut off the power supply, while 10 Civil Defence Force (APM) members assisted in the operation.

Firefighters also retrieved a safe from the premises and, upon the owner’s request, opened it using specialised equipment, successfully saving important documents and valuables despite minor heat damage.
