BEAUFORT: A 27-year-old man who attempted to take his own life by jumping from an old bridge on Saturday was saved after firefighters talked him down from the ledge.
Beaufort Fire and Rescue Station Chief Ishak Jabas said the station received an emergency call at 11.23am and immediately dispatched five personnel to the scene, located three kilometres away.
Using a ladder to reach the man, firefighters calmly engaged him in conversation, speaking in a gentle tone and asking about the reasons behind his actions.
The team learned that the man was struggling with personal problems and appealed to him to reconsider.
“After a few minutes, the man finally accepted the persuasion of our firefighters and agreed to come down, realising that such an action was futile and would benefit no one,” said Ishak.
Firefighters then guided the man safely down the ladder to ground level without incident.
Beaufort District Police Chief Supt Wong Leong Meng, when contacted, said police had not received any report regarding the incident.
“As of now, we have not received any report on such a case and hope that the matter has been resolved well by the Fire and Rescue team,” he said.
