Elderly man dies after elephant attack in Lahad Datu

LAHAD DATU: A 69-year-old man died after being trampled by an elephant in front of his son near a palm oil plantation along Jalan Tungku here on Sunday.

District Acting Police Chief Superintendent Jimmy Panyau said the victim sustained severe injuries, including fractured ribs and a broken lower leg.

He said the incident occurred at about 2pm when the victim and his 38-year-old son were closing a gate before leaving the plantation.

An elephant suddenly appeared and charged at them, with the son managing to flee while the victim failed to escape and was trampled.

The son later took his father to hospital but the victim was pronounced dead on arrival, and the case has been classified as sudden death while police urged witnesses to come forward and advised residents in the Tungku area to remain alert to the presence of wild elephants.
