Man jailed nine years, 10 strokes for syabu possession
SANDAKAN: A 35-year-old Indonesian was jailed nine years and ordered to receive 10 strokes of the cane for possessing 52.4 grammes of syabu.

Sessions Court Judge Roslinda Razali imposed the sentence after the accused, identified as Rudi, pleaded guilty to the charge.

Rudi was found in possession of the drug at about 1am on Jan 14 this year at an open hut in a private rubber plantation in Kampung Tangkarason, Paitan, with the offence framed under Section 39A(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Yuvan Bharathan appeared for the prosecution while the accused was unrepresented.

In separate cases, Ibrahim Yakop, 43, was jailed five years and given one stroke of the cane for carrying two knives in a public place, while Mohd Syafiq Nasrun, 28, was fined RM3,800 or six months’ jail for obstructing police during a roadblock at Bandar Indah, with the fine paid.
