Open burning warning in Sipitang
Area affected by bush fire.
SIPITANG: Police will act against any party responsible for causing fires or neglecting the safety of others, said District Police Chief Supt Awang Anak Suanda.

Legal action may be taken against those who carry out open burning under relevant fire safety laws and local regulations.

Residents must avoid open burning through clearing bushes, dry leaves or rubbish in residential areas, farms or forests, as fires can spread rapidly during hot and windy conditions.

The public is urged to exercise caution during the hot weather associated with the inter-monsoon transition phase, which began on March 29.

“Ensure areas around homes and farms are free from flammable materials and always be prepared with basic firefighting equipment such as buckets of water or portable fire extinguishers,” he said.

He also warned against allowing children or adults to play with fireworks near fire-prone areas.

Members of the public are advised to remain vigilant and to report any small fires immediately to the District Police Headquarters or the Fire and Rescue Department.

“Stay alert and do not take fire risks lightly. The safety of individuals, families and property is a shared responsibility,” said Awang Anak. Fire and Rescue Station Chief Calvin Joe Jeafrey said it received several reports of fires in the Merintaman area and at Sabah Forest Industries (SFI).

He said fires in Merintaman are located far from residential risk areas and are not easily accessible, while in SFI, the Fire and Rescue Department is carrying out regular monitoring in collaboration with other agencies, including the police.

He also cautioned that the negative impacts of such incidents include environmental destruction and health risks, particularly haze, which can cause breathing difficulties and other hazards.

Calvin reminded the public to be cautious as the current hot conditions may drive snakes to seek cooler shelter, including entering homes and storage areas.

“If a snake enters your home, do not attempt to handle it yourself. Instead, contact the Fire and Rescue Department for assistance,” he said.
