Long-term plan needed to curb Beaufort flooding
The flood situation in the Lumadan causing several main roads along the Gadong route to be cut off.
BEAUFORT: Comprehensive measures have been proposed to mitigate flooding in the area, including deepening and widening several rivers as well as constructing new canals.

Lumadan Assemblyman Datuk Ruslan Muharam said the long-term plan would involve Sungai Kebunau, Sungai Nusung, Sungai Kebajang, Sungai Gemarit Lago and Sungai Rantis in Kampung Bangkalalak.

He said these rivers were previously wide and deep but have become shallow and narrow over time, particularly Sungai Kebunau in Kampung Gadong, due to the installation of numerous culverts and natural sedimentation.

“Because the rivers have become shallow and narrow, dredging and widening works are necessary to ensure smoother water flow to the sea whenever floods occur,” he said.
