SANDAKAN: The early morning market operating at the Sandakan Public Market car park will be officially closed by Sandakan Municipal Council on Feb 28.
The market, which has been in existence for many years, operates daily from 9pm to 6am and has served as one of the main locations for restaurant operators and the general public to purchase raw produce such as vegetables and fruits at minimal prices.

It is understood that all business activities in the area will no longer be permitted beginning Feb 29.
The decision to terminate the operation of the early morning market was made after taking into consideration several factors, including issues related to cleanliness of the area, waste management and environmental pollution.
In addition, the operation of the market has also disrupted cleaning works, site preparation and the overall operations of Sandakan public market.
There have also been numerous public complaints regarding congestion in the area, which has adversely affected traffic flow. Therefore, hawkers are required to vacate the business area and completely cease operations on or before the stated date.
Failure to comply with this directive may result in enforcement action, including seizure of goods, issuance of compounds or other actions permitted under the relevant by-laws in force, without any further notice.
