Brothers held for threatening father-in-law
Jasmin said police investigations revealed that the brothers had gone to the complainant’s house late at night before allegedly acting aggressively and threatening the victim.
TAWAU: A lorry driver suspected of threatening his father-in-law with a samurai-style sword, together with his younger brother who was allegedly armed with a machete, was arrested during an operation in Kampung Merotai Besar, here, at about 12.10am on Sunday.

Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the two suspects, who are local brothers aged 39 and 27 respectively, were detained in connection with the incident. The victim is a 63-year-old man.

“The two suspects were arrested for allegedly threatening an elderly man with bladed weapons in front of a house in Kampung Pangkalan Asli,” he said in a statement, here, on Monday.

Jasmin said police investigations revealed that the brothers had gone to the complainant’s house late at night before allegedly acting aggressively and threatening the victim.

The main suspect, who is the complainant’s son-in-law, was said to be wielding a sword, while his younger brother was holding a machete during the incident, causing the victim to fear for his safety.

“The incident is believed to have occurred after the lorry driver’s wife, who is the victim’s daughter, wanted to stay overnight at her father’s house. The suspect allegedly disagreed, leading to an argument,” he said.

Fearing for his family’s safety, the complainant lodged a police report to seek protection and further action from the authorities.

Based on the report, a team from the District Criminal Investigation Division (CID) later arrested both suspects.

Background checks revealed that the first suspect has prior criminal records involving threats and housebreaking, while the second suspect has no criminal record, ACP Jasmin added.

The case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of up to two years’ imprisonment, or a fine, or both, upon conviction.
