KUNAK: A pole belonging to Telekom Malaysia (TM) near a restaurant at Simpang Empat, Jalan Kunak-Lahad Datu collapsed after a ketapang tree fell, here, recently.
A restaurant worker said the premises had been closed for the past week as the owner was on holiday in Indonesia.
“I was shocked when I heard a loud crashing sound and rushed outside.
“A large ketapang tree had fallen right in front of this restaurant. Luckily, there were no cars parked under the tree,” the worker said when met at the scene.
The large tree fell and crushed the Telekom Malaysia pole and cables. However, the restaurant premises were spared, although several strands of decorative lighting wires outside the compound were severed after being struck by falling branches.
Meanwhile, Kunak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Chief Mohamad Omarbatha confirmed the incident and deployed a team of personnel along with an FRT fire engine to the location to remove the fallen tree trunk and branches.
Firefighters used a chainsaw in the operation.
Apart from the Fire and Rescue Department, personnel from the Civil Defence Force (APM) and Sabah Electricity (SESB) were also present at the scene to assist.
