Tenom: Recent floods swept away a bridge at Kg Tilis, cutting off the main access route for residents to neighbouring villages including Kg Mahunsop and Kg Tinura.
The Public Works Department (JKR) has been instructed to immediately provide an alternative route to ensure residents’ safety and maintain daily movement, particularly for those travelling to school, work and to obtain essential supplies.
This also includes clearing landslide debris caused by continuous rain along roads in Kg Kaang, Malulut, Alutok, Ahisal and Lumuyu.
Tenom District Officer and chairman of the Tenom District Disaster Management Committee, Alexander Liew, said JKR, together with relevant agencies, is currently carrying out a technical assessment to identify the most suitable route for a temporary road while awaiting permanent repairs to the damaged bridge.
“This measure is to ensure residents are not cut off from other areas and can continue their daily routines safely,” he said at the District Office, here.
Meanwhile, five temporary evacuation centres (PPS) were activated on Monday afternoon to accommodate residents affected by the floods.
The centres are Rumah Kebudayaan Pantugon Saga, Rumah Kebudayaan Mandalom Lama, Rumah Kebudayaan Pontomon, Sekolah Kebangsaan Saga and the Kampung Labut Open Hall.
According to Alexander, flood conditions in several areas have begun to subside, but close monitoring of river levels and weather conditions is ongoing to ensure residents’ safety.
Food aid, basic necessities and tent equipment have been distributed to all evacuation centres to ensure the welfare of displaced residents is maintained throughout the evacuation period.
Also visiting the affected areas and distributing food aid was the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry, who is also Melalap Assemblyman, Datuk Jamawi Jaffar.
