Kota Kinabalu: A proposed Kinabalu Cable Car project must adhere to sustainable development principles and environmental conservation, said State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk JafryAriffin.

He said this after receiving a courtesy visit from Jesselton International Sdn Bhd, which presented the proposal and feasibility study for the project in Kundasang, near Mount Kinabalu.

Jafry stressed that any development involving Mount Kinabalu must be assessed thoroughly, with priority given to environmental sustainability and preservation of the State’s natural heritage.

He said Mount Kinabalu, as a Unesco World Heritage Site with high biodiversity and ecological value, requires strict compliance with standards, including comprehensive environmental impact assessments and controlled implementation to avoid undue pressure on sensitive ecosystems.

The 2026 D-MAX also introduces an 8-speed automatic gearbox with sequential shift across the range, including the Single Cab variant, making it the first pick-up truck in Malaysia to offer an automatic transmission in that body style.
He added that any decision on the proposal would be made carefully based on data and scientific considerations through engagement with relevant agencies, including Sabah Parks and other stakeholders, while ensuring a balance between economic development and environmental conservation.
