Where music is felt, not just heard
Stefanus conducts a teaching demo on how students with hearing impairment can follow lessons though beat, vibration and sensory-based learning method that he developed.
Kota Kinabalu: A special education school in Sabah has received a boost with the opening of the State’s first Inclusive Music Room, designed specifically for students with hearing impairment and learning disabilities.

Sekolah Kebangsaan Pendidikan Khas Kota Kinabalu (SKPK KK) unveiled the upgraded Bilik Muzik Inklusif on Tuesday, made possible through a RM50, 000 sponsorship from Taylor’s College.

The sponsorship was awarded to teacher Stefanus Lucas, who won the RISE Educator Award 2025. The specially designed room is equipped with traditional and modern instruments that help students experience music through rhythm, vibration and visual cues.

Sabah State Education Department Special Education Sector Chief Assistant Director Mohamad Sufri Salim praised the public-private partnership.

The ceremony was also attended by the Chief Minister’s Senior Private Secretary Datuk Ceasar Mandela Malakun.

Since joining SKPK KK in 2024, Stefanus has developed a structured music programmeme involving over 40 students. His innovative approach has enabled students to perform publicly and gain international recognition.

“Many people assume music is only about hearing, but for my students, it is about feeling, seeing and expressing,” Stefanus said.

“This room is a reminder that we should always focus on ability, not disability,” he added. 

Meanwhile, Headmaster Muhammad Hamka Eallie said the music room represents hope and opportunity for students. 

“For many of them, music has become a new way to communicate, build confidence and express joy,” he said. 

Taylor’s College Campus Director Josephine Tan said this is the second school in Sabah that the college has supported. 

“Every child deserves the opportunity to learn, express, and thrive, regardless of their abilities,” she said.

The RISE Educator Award included RM5, 000 for Stefanus personally and RM50, 000 for the school, with four other finalists receiving RM1, 000 each and RM10, 000 for their schools.
