Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Durian Tourism Bazaar at Todak Waterfront Segama, here,  recorded RM537,050 in sales from some 15,000 visitors over three days from Dec. 12.

MasDa association cum organising chairman Johnny Ting said durian sales alone reached RM436,050 from 10.82 tonnes of fruit, while other stalls contributed RM101,000.

The overwhelming response exceeded expectations, particularly for the five durian stalls, which drew large crowds eager to sample premium varieties such as Musang King and Blackthorn grown in Sabah. Vendors hoped DBKK would continue to allow Todak Waterfront Segama be the venue for future bazaars, citing its strategic location, scenic sunset views, easy access and proximity to other attractions.

Many called for the event to become an annual fixture during durian season, with Kota Kinabalu promoted as “KK Durian City, A Gateway to the King of Fruits in Sabah.”

Kota Kinabalu: KOTA KINABALU: Fiesta Mega Raya (FMR) 2026 is set to be the largest and most prestigious Hari Raya celebration in Sabah, taking place from March 7 to 18, at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), here.
“We didn’t expect such a big turnout of and such high sales, especially from the five durian stalls. Although we were not fully prepared, we managed to cope and we hope visitors were happy with the opportunity to taste genuine durian varieties from Sabah.

Many came to appreciate the high quality of premium durians planted and harvested in Sabah, such as Musang King and Blackthorn, offered at reasonable prices,” said Ting.

Organisers extended their gratitude to Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah and DBKK as well as to Fama for assisting with preparations.

Ting described Sabah as a hidden gem for eco-tourism, blessed with rich soil, dedicated farmers and beautiful farms that can showcase their natural charm while introducing local fruits to both international and domestic visitors.

He likened opening farms to tourists as opening one’s home, allowing them to experience the warmth, hospitality and culture of local farmers.

He emphasised that agrotourism not only highlights Sabah’s agricultural heritage but also benefits surrounding communities through infrastructure development, cultural exchange, and job creation.

He noted that while nearly 200 associations exist, many farmers face challenges in exporting their fruits. Agrotourism, however, provides a local avenue for farmers to sell their produce directly to visitors, creating sustainable opportunities and strengthening the rural economy.

MasDa hopes to continue working closely with Tourism Malaysia, the Sabah Tourism Board, DBKK, the Sabah Agriculture Department, and other durian fruit associations to expand agrotourism initiatives and ensure the industry’s growth benefits both farmers and communities.
