Urgent SPCA plea to help sponsor strays
Some of the puppies are available for adoption.
Kota Kinabalu: Following the suspension of SPCA Kota Kinabalu’s rescue operations on Dec 9, its current funds are only sufficient to sustain approximately two more months of basic operations.

“Rescuing stray animals is a hallmark of a civilised society and reflection of human compassion and kindness.

“Guided by humanitarian values and moral responsibility, SPCA Kota Kinabalu continues to persevere despite severe financial constraints, hoping to continue providing shelter and protection for animals in need,” it said in a statement, appealing to the public’s generosity to participate in the Animal Sponsorship Programme.

Under the programme to help the strays, donors can choose to sponsor one or more animals, either short-term or long-term:
  •  Monthly Sponsorship – dog: RM120 per month and cat: RM80 per month
  •  Annual Sponsorship – dog: RM1,440 per year and cat: RM960 per year
  •  One-Time Sponsorship – any amount is welcome as every contribution makes a difference

Kota Kinabalu: KOTA KINABALU: Fiesta Mega Raya (FMR) 2026 is set to be the largest and most prestigious Hari Raya celebration in Sabah, taking place from March 7 to 18, at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), here.
The shelter’s monthly operating cost is approximately RM90,000, covering animal food, sterilisation and medical expenses, salaries for 15 staff members, utilities and other essential costs.

“As we do not receive long-term government funding, we rely entirely on public donations and fundraising activities to continue our work.

“Although fundraising for animals is often more challenging than for humans, we firmly believe that love has the power to unite strength and hope.”

If 310 kind-hearted individuals participate in the sponsorship programme, it would significantly reduce the organisation’s financial burden.

SPCA KK is a non-profit, non-governmental animal welfare organisation, established on Feb 14, 2006 by a group of dedicated volunteers.

“Guided by our principle of ‘Respect Life, Love Animals,’ we are committed to rescuing, caring for, and rehoming stray animals, while promoting a more humane society through education and advocacy,” it said, noting that it has rescued over 35,000 stray animals since 2006.

The group also strongly advocates “Adopt, Don’t Shop” concept to give homeless animals a second chance. To date, over 2,700 dogs and cats were adopted through their initiatives.

“We also work closely with the Sabah Veterinary Department through education and enforcement to prevent animal cruelty and abandonment.”

It added that under Sabah Animal Welfare Enactment 2015, anyone found guilty of animal cruelty may face a fine of up to RM100,000, imprisonment of up to three years, or both.

“If you witness animal abuse, please report it – your action can help protect innocent lives.”

The SPCA KK Animal Shelter is located in Kg Gana, Papar, and currently houses approximately 220 dogs and 90 cats, including 15 in foster homes. Many of these animals were rescued from abandonment, injury, or life-threatening conditions.
