KENINGAU: A 30-second video showing two teenagers engaging in illegal motorcycle racing along Jalan Lurus near Bataras Keningau recently went viral on social media, sparking concern among residents.

The footage shows several youths blocking the traffic lane to create space for the dangerous daytime race, putting other road users at risk.

The incident drew strong criticism from the local community, who described the behaviour as irresponsible and self-destructive.

A motorist interviewed said he was deeply disappointed by the teens' actions, noting that their behaviour not only endangered themselves but could also lead to serious accidents.

Police reminded the public that illegal racing is a serious offense that carries penalties, including seizure of the motorcycle, compounding, and court action.

The incident also prompted calls from local residents who believe it is time for Keningau to have its own official motorcycle circuit.  They said a recreational or sporting-grade track would provide a safer space for youths interested in motorsports without endangering other road users.

The proposed track is also seen as a long-term preventive measure to curb the increasingly worrying trend of illegal racing.

Residents hoped authorities would consider the need for such a facility to ensure public safety and prevent similar incidents from occurring again in Keningau.
