Kota Kinabalu: Sabah FC’s Jafri Chew said the league victory over Penang FC on Sunday is a morale booster for the team ahead of their FA Cup second leg semi-final tie against Selangor FC this Saturday.
The striker who scored a stunner in the 3-2 win reckoned the win came at the right time after failing to win their past eight matches since the league started.
“The victory against Penang was very important to the team because we badly needed to collect our first three points in the league and to have a positive mood before we meet Selangor in the Cup tie later,” he said.
Sabah FC and Selangor FC are tied 2-2 in the first leg and the winning team this Saturday will progress to the final against the winner of the other semi-final tie between Johor Darul Ta’zim FC and Kuching City FC.
On his goal against Penang FC from about 40 metres, he said it was the first time he managed that in a competitive match.
“I am really satisfied with that goal. I was only able to do it in training before Sunday.”
He also credited his teammates for his good form in the new season.
“The support of my teammates has definitely made a very positive impact on my performance this season.
“With their constant backing, I am confident that I can give even more to help the team achieve something great,” he added.
