Penang on revenge mission
Penang’s Hermann Kipre (front left) is closed down by Sabah defenders during the MFL Challenge Cup at the Likas Stadium recently.
SABAH FC were defeated 0-1 by Malacca FC in the Super League at the Hang Jebat Stadium last Thursday, fresh from winning the MFL Challenge Cup only a few days ago at the Likas Stadium.

The loss is particularly disheartening as Sabah FC despite their dominance, continued to struggle with missed goal-scoring opportunities game after game.

Following the defeat, Sabah FC have also dropped one position in the league standings, now sitting at 11th place.

With only four more games left to play this season, there is more pressure on the team to secure maximum points for a chance to move up in the rankings

Every point counts for Sabah FC.

We must focus on securing full points in these encounters to improve our league standings and provide the fans with the positive outcomes they desire.

The performance of the team in this season has been more than disappointing. Even with the inconsistent performance, the fans have shown unwavering support. Winning the MFL Challenge Trophy has certainly brought joy to the supporters

Tomorrow, Sabah FC are set to take on Penang FC again. As the players prepare for the match, the challenge lies in reclaiming their winning form and also to prove to the fans that the victory in the Cup final was not just a fluke.

Hopefully the Cup triumph could provide the confidence they need to secure points in this match.

I also want to remind the players the importance of converting scoring opportunities. To win all three points, the team must step up their game and turn chances into goals.

However, following a closely contested cup final that ended in heartbreak for Penang FC, I am sure they are poised for redemption and aim to turn the tide in this match with the support of their fans.

They will be eager to prove they are the stronger side after a performance marred by poor finishing that ultimately cost them a trophy.

As the current season approaches its conclusion, it’s crucial for our team to reflect on our performance and prepare for the challenges of the next season.

A notable area for improvement lies in our team’s defensive and attacking qualities if we are to build a stronger side for the upcoming season.

Penang are rank 9th, while Sabah FC hold 11th position.

Sabah won the Challenge Cup after a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout victory over Penang. The final was decided from the spot following a 1-1 aggregate draw after 120 minutes of football at Likas Stadium.

A crowd of 20,589 watched as Sabah controlled possession for large periods of the match. Penang, however, created the more dangerous chances through swift counter-attacks.

In the spot-kicks, Sabah winger Farhan Roslan stepped up to score the winning penalty. His decisive strike ended Sabah’s seven-year wait for a trophy. Their last title was the Premier League crown in 2019.

This victory also marks the first time a team from Borneo has won the Challenge Cup. Before the match, the Malaysian Football League presented a RM20,000 contribution to the Sabah State Government fund.

The donation is to assist victims of a fire in Kampung Bahagia, Sandakan. A minute’s silence was also observed for the affected residents.

Meanwhile, let’s take a moment to celebrate the remarkable achievement of our sister State team, Kuching FC, who have successfully qualified for the finals of the Malaysia Cup.

They will face the formidable JDT, a team that has proven to be an invincible force in the league.
