TAWAU: All Umno-BN candidates are reminded not to introduce divisive political cultures from outside Sabah, as the state has long been recognised as one of the most harmonious.
Umno Sec-Gen Datuk Wira Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, commenting on a recent controversial remark by a Kedah-based Perikatan Nasional (PN) lawmaker, stressed that the dignity of the Sabah people cannot be “bought”, especially with offers that do not reflect their true worth.
A Kedah Perikatan Nasional (PN) Assemblyman representing PAS said all that is needed to win over Sabah voters are two loaves of Gardenia bread.
“Sabahans may hold different political views, but they coexist in remarkable harmony. So never bring foreign political cultures here, because the people already live in peace and unity,” he said.
He told reporters this during the Titik Temu – Dari Bicara Ke Bersama programme, held at the BN Tanjung Batu state constituency level in Kampung Bakau, Tanjung Batu.
Present was BN’s Tanjung Batu candidate, Samasuddin Yusop, who is tasked with reclaiming the seat previously won by BN in PRN16 through former assemblyman Datuk Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandy.
Dr Asyraf emphasised that all BN candidates must remain focused and refrain from engaging in negative campaigning, including slander, character attacks, or any language that insults the dignity of Sabahans.
“We must highlight our track record, Umno-BN’s proven commitment to Sabah’s development, and uphold harmony and respect for the state’s diverse communities.
“We focus on what Umno and BN can offer the people. We present the achievements we have already delivered—there is no need to promise the moon and stars,” he said.
He added that this directive aligns with the party leadership’s guidance for a campaign strategy rooted in respect, wisdom and cultural sensitivity, especially when meeting and engaging with the public.
Dr Asyraf said BN continues to regard Sabah as a key stronghold and an essential pillar for the party’s national resurgence, despite setbacks during the 2018 General Election (GE14).
“Sabah has always been BN’s stronghold, the backbone of our efforts to rise again nationally. BN never lost in Sabah—we were only betrayed in 2018,” he said.
He said this serves as the driving force behind BN’s determination to return Sabah to a path of strong development, in line with its campaign theme, Bikin Balik Sabah, which promises renewed commitment and approaches for the people.
