Kota Kinabalu: Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick has officially tendered his resignation from the Cabinet.
The Sabah Pakatan Harapan Chairman said he submitted his resignation letter Monday morning.
“I have officially submitted my letter of resignation as the Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Minister. Starting today, I will begin using my remaining leave,” said the United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (Upko) President in a post on Facebook.
Ewon added that later Monday, he will chair a special meeting of Upko’s supreme council to discuss the “Sabah First” agenda.
He said the agenda has always been the foundation of the party’s struggle, as enshrined in its constitution.
On Saturday, Ewon announced that he would soon resign from the Cabinet, saying he must uphold Sabah’s rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
Under Upko’s party constitution, Ewon added, one of the objectives of the party’s formation is to champion and uphold the MA63 and the rights of Sabah under the Federal Constitution.
As such, he had said he could not support any decision that contradicts the Kota Kinabalu High Court’s ruling on Oct 17 related to state constitutional rights.
The Kota Kinabalu High Court, in its Oct 17 ruling, directed the Federal Government to conduct a review with Sabah to determine the state’s 40 per cent entitlement for each financial year from 1974 to 2021.
