Misuse of power claims old and baseless: Muis
Muis has also initiated a defamation suit against those spreading the claims. 
Kota Kinabalu: Majlis Ugama Islam Sabah (Muis) dismissed renewed allegations circulating on social media claiming misuse of power involving Zakat Fund management, saying the accusations are old and completely baseless.

In a statement, Muis said the issue had previously drawn the attention of the Chief Minister and the Minister in charge of Religious Affairs, who instructed a thorough investigation into the matter.

Muis has also initiated a defamation suit against those spreading the claims. 

Court proceedings remain ongoing and Muis urged the public to respect the legal process.

“The investigation found no elements of wrongdoing or criminal conduct by any Muis officer or internal party,” they said.

Muis also highlighted that the National Audit Department conducts comprehensive annual audits of its financial accounts, including the Zakat Fund. 

“As a result, Muis has received a Clean Audit Certificate for five consecutive years, proving its financial governance is transparent, prudent and in compliance with accounting standards and related enactments,” they said.

Muis further noted that it obtained the international MS ISO 9001:2015 certification in 2021 following annual compliance audits, demonstrating that Muis operates systematically and professionally. 

“Additionally, the management is in the final phase of securing the Anti-Bribery Management System (ABMS) certification MS ISO 37001:2016, reflecting its strong commitment to preventing corruption and ensuring clean governance.

“The public are urged not to be swayed by malicious allegations intended to undermine its credibility as a key Islamic institution that protects the welfare of asnaf and empowers the Muslim community in Sabah,” the Council added.

It affirmed that it will continue to uphold trust and integrity in carrying out its responsibilities and will not hesitate to take legal action against any party attempting to damage its reputation.
