TAWAU: Charlton Chan Khong (Class 5G) and Isaac Lee Jun Yann (Class 6B) made their school-SJKC Yuk Chin, Tawau proud when they bagged the first runner-up title in the U12 Boys’ Doubles category at the Imperium Inernational Secondary School (IISS) Junior Pickleball Championship 2025 held in Kota Kinabalu recently.
It was an inaugural sport activity organised by the IISS in collaboration with the Sabah Pickleball Association and the Kota Kinabalu Pickleball Association at the pickleball courts of IISS.
The competition drew young players from across Sabah, and the pair’s teamwork and perseverance led them all the way to the finals, earning the First Runner-up title medal and a cash prize of RM300 with a certificate.
According to school principal Pang Dan Fung, Charlton and Isaac are passionate about pickleball. They actively attend the school’s training sessions every Tuesday and Thursday as well as took the initiative to practice extra hours before the tournament — demonstrating great dedication and spirit.
Meanwhile, they also undergo intensive pickleball training with their respective coach.
Pang said, both boys’ dedication and sportsmanship shine through their achievements. With continued passion and teamwork, Charlton and Isaac are well on their way to becoming Sabah’s next generation of pickleball champions.
The school extended its gratitude to the pickleball coaches and the parents of both pupils for their strong support in encouraging the boys to take part in the competition, promote sports and bring honour to the school.
In this exclusive interview, Charlton expressed they were really excited and a bit nervous. The other teams were very strong, but they just told themselves to play their best and have fun. When they found out they were the first runner-up, they couldn’t believe it — it felt amazing!
“For me, it was learning to coordinate with my partner under pressure. Doubles require good teamwork, and we had to trust each other and communicate well. I love the energy of the game and how it helps me stay active. It’s also a great way to make friends,” he said.
Charlton, who is also a tennis athlete, said he wants to keep improving and join more tournaments. Maybe next time, they can go for the champion title!
Meanwhile, Isaac also was proud and happy. It was his first big tournament outside of school, so to reach the finals and win a medal made all the hard work worth it.
“The pressure! Some matches were very close, and we had to stay calm even when we were behind.”
He watched videos of professional players to learn better serves and returns. He wanted to improve their techniques and teamwork. It’s really fun and fast! He likes that it combines skills from tennis, badminton and ping pong.
“We’ll train harder and continue representing our school proudly,” he added.
