Drugs: 2 Indonesians held
TAWAU: Two Indonesians were arrested for possessing 601.15gm of Syabu during their journey to Indonesia from Sebatik Island, Thursday.They were believed to be from Tawau and were arrested at the main entrance of a farm at the island.

District Police Chief ACP Peter Umbuas (pic) said the two men, aged 39 and 41, hid the drugs worth RM36,000 in a box hung in the front compartment of the motorcycle they were riding on.

Earlier, a police team from Bergosong Police Station were conducting a Movement Control Order (MCO) patrolling in the area, where they bumped into the suspects that were acting in a suspicious manner.

“During the body check, police did not find any illegal items, however, the drugs were found during a further inspection on their motorcycle, where the drugs were found in a box, inside a plastic containing transparent lumps suspected to be Syabu,” he told a press conference at Tawau Police Headquarters, Thursday. According to Peter, preliminary investigations revealed that the two suspects did not have any identification documents.

They were believed to be foreigners and suspected of travelling to neighbouring countries from Sebatik Island, Malaysia.

“We are still investigating to ascertain where they obtained the drugs from and to where it was going to be distributed,” he said.

He said that there were no previous criminal records for both suspects, however, one of them tested positive for drugs during the urine test.

He added that the two suspects were remanded in custody for seven days beginning Wednesday under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code (KPJ), for further investigation under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries a death penalty if convicted.

At the same time, Peter said the suspects were also being investigated under Section 269 of the Penal Code and Regulation 11 (1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures Within the Infected Local Area) (No.3) 2020.
