KUALA PENYU: Authorities have seized 10 Vietnamese fishing boats found encroaching into Sabah waters and two of them were sunk to become artificial reefs on Friday.

One of the two boats was sunk at Tompok Nosong, 3 nautical miles off the Fishery Department’s jetty here.

The rest will be disposed of later this year, said Agriculture and Food Industry Minister Datuk Junz Wong, adding sinking such ships is the Government’s new policy to send a strong message to foreign fishing boats.

Wong said previously seized foreign fishing boats were auctioned off, which was ineffective as the original owners could then buy them back and repeat their offences later.

Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said the two projects together would add 28MWac of new power generation capacity, helping to stabilise electricity supply in Sabah.
