Kota Kinabalu: More than RM132,000 was disbursed to high-achieving students during the Wira SPM 2025 Appreciation Ceremony for the Kota Kinabalu Parliamentary Constituency, which honoured academic excellence among 436 outstanding SPM 2025 students from schools across the constituency.

The event was held at the hall of SJK(C) Chung Hwa Likas and officiated by Datuk Chan Foong Hin, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security who is also Member of Parliament for Kota Kinabalu.

The allocation of more than RM132,000 this year was provided as recognition and encouragement for students who achieved excellent results in the 2025 SPM examination.

According to Chan, the programme is an annual initiative under the Kota Kinabalu parliamentary office aimed at recognising student achievement while motivating young people to pursue academic excellence.

He noted that the incentive scheme for SPM high achievers has been implemented for the past two years, with allocations showing a steady increase—from more than RM70,000 in the first year, to nearly RM100,000 in the following year, and rising to over RM132,000 this year.

“This year is particularly encouraging because out of 605 students in Sabah who obtained straight A’s in SPM 2025, about 436 are from schools within the Kota Kinabalu Parliamentary constituency,” he said, adding that this reflects the strong academic performance and competitiveness of local schools at both state and national levels.

Chan also encouraged students to consider pursuing studies in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), particularly engineering fields, to meet Sabah’s future development needs.

He expressed hope that graduates would eventually return to serve in Sabah after completing their studies, contributing to infrastructure development and the state’s progress.

“Infrastructure development requires sufficient human capital, especially professionals such as engineers. Sabah has a great need in this area. I hope our young people will pursue higher education and return to contribute their expertise for the future development of Sabah,” he said.

He also extended appreciation to teachers, parents, and schools for their dedication and sacrifices in ensuring student success.

The ceremony featured awards across multiple categories, including achievements from 6A to 12A, best male and female students, best schools, and special recognition for students with special educational needs (MBPK).

Key achievements announced included Chong Jing Yeng from SM Kian Kok Kota Kinabalu, who was named Best Male Student with 12A, while Daphne Chan from the same school was named Best Female Student with 11A.

SM Maktab Sabah received recognition as Best School (LMS) with a 100pc achievement rate, while SM Kian Kok Kota Kinabalu also received Best School (GPS) and Anjakan Paradigma awards.

Special recognition was also given to schools within the Kota Kinabalu parliamentary area that demonstrated strong SPM 2025 performance, including those with Integrated Special Education Programmes (PPKI).

Chan further encouraged students to take advantage of scholarships and educational assistance offered by the Sabah state and federal governments, including BKNS, Yayasan Sabah, and the Public Service Department (JPA) Malaysia for higher education opportunities.
