RANAU: Ranau Member of Parliament Datuk Jonathan Yasin called on the Orang Sungai to remain united and continue strengthening their cultural identity, describing Pesta Bangkar as an important platform for building a stronger future for the community.

Speaking during the Pesta Bangkar 2026 celebration held at Kampung Meridi recently, Jonathan said the gathering represented more than just a cultural event. It marked a significant milestone in bringing members of the Orang Sungai community together under a common vision.

“I thank the Orang Sungai community for organising this gathering. What we are witnessing today is a beginning. It is a historic moment that should be remembered because it reflects the willingness of the community to come together, unite and move forward as one,” he said.

Jonathan acknowledged that there may be some who view such cultural gatherings merely as festive celebrations. However, he stressed that the deeper significance of Pesta Bangkar lies in its ability to unite the community and create a shared sense of purpose.

Jonathan pointed to the achievements of larger cultural organisations in Sabah, noting that many have evolved into institutions that not only preserve culture but also serve as centres for economic activity, community development and social advancement.

The annual Pesta Bangkar celebration serves as one of the key cultural gatherings for the Orang Sungai community in Ranau, providing a platform to showcase traditional heritage, strengthen community ties and foster greater appreciation for the community’s rich cultural legacy.
