Violence against wife: Foreigner remanded in Ranau
According to police, the case is being investigated under Sections 323 and 326A of the Penal Code, which relate to voluntarily causing hurt and causing hurt against a spouse.
RANAU: A 37-year-old foreign worker has been remanded for four days to assist police investigations into an alleged domestic violence incident involving his wife at a workers’ quarters in Kampung Bongkud, here.

The remand order was obtained under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code following the suspect’s arrest by officers from the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ranau District Police Headquarters (IPD Ranau) on June 5.

According to police, the case is being investigated under Sections 323 and 326A of the Penal Code, which relate to voluntarily causing hurt and causing hurt against a spouse.

The investigation began after a 44-year-old housewife lodged a report alleging that she was assaulted by her husband during an argument at their residence in a sawmill workers’ settlement on the evening of June 4.

In her report, the woman claimed she was struck on the chin, choked and pushed during the incident following a misunderstanding. 

She further alleged that similar incidents had occurred previously and that she lodged the report because she could no longer tolerate her husband’s alleged aggressive behaviour.

Acting on the report, a team of police officers led by an investigating officer arrested the suspect at the workers’ quarters on June 5 at 5.34pm.

The suspect, an Indonesian national, was taken into custody to facilitate further investigations before being placed in the Ranau police station lock-up.

According to the investigation diary, police are conducting further inquiries, including recording statements from the suspect and witnesses, obtaining photographs and fingerprints, and gathering additional evidence related to the case.

The woman also informed investigators that she feared returning home due to concerns for her safety.
