Kota Kinabalu: Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin has expressed concern over an injured Bornean elephant believed to be in the Felda Kalabakan Selatan area.
He said the case came to public attention after a video circulated on social media showing the elephant with an apparent injury to its trunk.
Jafry said a complaint regarding the elephant was lodged last week, prompting search and field monitoring operations by authorities on May 13 and 14, but the animal could not be located during the exercise.
He said preliminary veterinary assessments indicated trunk injuries were highly complex and that rescue efforts, if required, could involve surgery, intensive treatment, feeding management, temporary holding arrangements and continuous monitoring for up to two weeks.
Jafry said field rangers from the Sabah Wildlife Department were continuing close monitoring of the case, while investigations into the cause of the injury remained ongoing, including the possibility of snaring or contact with sharp objects and harvesting tools left in oil palm plantation areas.
