SANDAKAN: Ten new members of the Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) were sworn in at a ceremony at the Sabah Hotel Ballroom, Tuesday, witnessed by State Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif, his Assistant Datuk Dr Maijol Mahap and Municipal Council President Datuk Walter Kenson.
They were Normidah Alan, Abu Mutalib Zainal Abidin, Harian Kassim, Abdul Razor Rosland, Andi Surianto Samsuddin, Aliakbar Isnaji, Yunizam Yusof, Amirul Amin Rashid, Mohd Zharif Aizat Datuk Samsudin, Ramlan Ibrahim, Koh Siew Eng, Shaninnah Sani, Mohd Gadaffy M Sahih, Datuk Chew Kok Woh and Lim Jik Dak.
The event also saw the signing of a memorandum of understanding between MPS and strategic partners, namely the Sandakan United Chinese Community Association, Sandakan Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Merdeka Daily News and TV Sabah.
Speaking at a press conference, Arifin expressed hope that the newly appointed members, together with 15 existing councillors, would contribute ideas towards Sandakan’s development.
He said the strategic collaboration is expected to strengthen cooperation between the Council and its partners in developing the district.
Arifin also commended MPS for enhancing collaboration with various parties, including the media, which he described as an important platform for disseminating accurate information.

He welcomed MPS’ initiative to allocate 30 per cent of business opportunities to youths, including the provision of stalls and business spaces.
“Digitalisation of services is also in line with the Government’s aspiration to improve service delivery efficiency,” he said.
He added that the Ministry took note of urgent needs related to cleanliness and stressed the role of Council management and members in ensuring effective concession services.
On a recent fire incident in Kampung Bahagia, he said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor had announced assistance for affected victims, with additional aid provided by the Sabah Islamic Religious Council.
Also present were State Local Government and Housing Ministry Permanent Secretary Datuk Jamili Nais, Community Development Leaders Unit Director Datuk Awang Kadin Tang and others.
