Kota Kinabalu: Police arrested a 38-year-old local in connection with a robbery and assault at a laundrette in Alamesra on Wednesday that recently went viral on social media.
Acting Kota Kinabalu District Police Chief Supt Syed Lot Syed Ab Rahman said the suspect was detained on the same day of the incident in the Inanam area to assist in investigations.
“Initial investigations led to the arrest of a local man believed to be involved in the incident. The case is currently under investigation,” he said in a statement.
Police said the incident had sparked widespread reactions online, including unverified speculation about the suspect.
A viral clip circulating on social media shows the aftermath of the incident, with a female victim, believed to be a student, seen seated on the ground, injured and appearing helpless after the attack.
“We advise the public not to speculate or share unverified information, as it may interfere with ongoing investigations,” Syed Lot added.
He stressed that the police remain committed to ensuring public safety and will continue to intensify crime prevention patrols in the area.
Members of the public with information related to the case are urged to come forward to assist investigations.
Authorities also warned that strict action may be taken against individuals who spread false or misleading information on social media that could disrupt the investigation or public order.
