Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah State Railway Department (JKNS) is currently conducting two studies related to the State’s railway services, said Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Ewon Benedick.
Ewon, who is also State Industrial Development, Entrepreneurship and Transport Minister, said the studies include a review of railway service fares.

He said the studies also cover the feasibility of a new route from Putatan to Kota Kinabalu, extending to the Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (KKIP) and up to Sepanggar Port.
“The fare review study has now reached 90 per cent completion and will first be presented to the Ministry before being brought to the State Cabinet for further consideration.
“I decided to wait for the study to be fully completed, particularly the fare review which is nearing completion, before presenting it to the Ministry and subsequently to the Sabah Cabinet,” he told reporters after officiating the JKNS 2026 Excellent Service Awards and Appreciation ceremony on Tuesday.
Ewon said the feasibility study for the Putatan-KKIP-Sepanggar route is expected to take 12 months and is part of a long-term plan to expand the railway network in the State.

At the same time, he said JKNS is also contributing input to the feasibility study of the Trans Borneo Railway project currently being carried out by the Federal Government.
He added that his Ministry will also begin a study on the Sabah Sustainable Transport Master Plan this year, with JKNS involved in both the steering and technical committees.
