The 17-hectare beachfront resort, located about 90 minutes from Kota Kinabalu International Airport, will be Club Med’s second property in Malaysia after Club Med Cherating.
Club Med President and CEO Stéphane Maquaire described the project as a key step in the company’s regional expansion.
“The opening of Club Med Borneo represents a significant milestone in our global expansion strategy and reinforces our commitment to growth in Southeast Asia,” he said.
The resort will feature 400 guest rooms, including 39 Exclusive Collection suites, as well as multiple dining venues, pools, a spa and family-oriented facilities such as the brand’s Kids’ Club for children aged four months to 17 years.
Club Med said the development is designed with sustainability in mind and aims to meet BREEAM environmental standards while also pursuing Green Globe certification for its operations.
Club Med CEO for East, South Asia and Pacific Rachael Harding said the resort was envisioned as a sanctuary that combines hospitality with Sabah’s natural landscape and culture.
“Every detail celebrates the vibrancy of local culture and the natural habitat while offering guests a unique experience in Sabah,” she said.
The project, developed in collaboration with Golden Sands Beach Resort City Sdn Bhd, is expected to create more than 350 direct and indirect jobs in the Kuala Penyu area.
Guests will also be able to take part in cultural and nature-based activities, including traditional craft workshops, wildlife river cruises and excursions to nearby attractions such as Pulau Tiga and the Mari-Mari Cultural Village.
Bookings for stays between Nov 16, 2026 and Jan 3, 2027 will include a complimentary upgrade to Deluxe rooms, subject to availability.
