Government servant held in Sandakan over Sabah Maju Jaya housing
SANDAKAN: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Sabah detained a civil servant here suspected of abusing his position by recommending two unqualified family members as recipients of houses under the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) Rumah Mesra programme.

The man, believed to be in his 50s, was detained at 9.50am on Monday while giving his statement at the MACC office here.

Preliminary investigations revealed the alleged misconduct happened in 2022, with the houses built under the names of the man’s father-in-law and brother-in-law completed in 2023.

However, both properties remained unoccupied as of 2025, raising doubts over the recipients’ actual eligibility and potentially undermining the objectives of the housing assistance programme.

Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said the two projects together would add 28MWac of new power generation capacity, helping to stabilise electricity supply in Sabah.
Sabah MACC Director Mohd Fuad Bee Basrah confirmed the arrest when contacted.

The man is expected to be charged at the Sandakan Sessions Court soon.
