Kota Kinabalu: Likas Assemblyman Tham Yun Fook cautioned that education must not be handled ambiguously, asserting that the federal government’s “UEC+2” pathway is a mere “delaying tactic” rather than a genuine step toward institutional reform.
The Parti Warisan lawmaker argued that the policy, which allows Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) holders to apply to local universities under specific conditions, serves only to sidestep the core issue of formal recognition.
Tham criticised the policy as a strategic manoeuvre designed to manage political tensions rather than resolve academic grievances.
He pointed out the contradiction in the National Unity Minister’s recent statements, noting that while UEC+2 exists, the Ministry of Education still does not officially recognise the certificate.
