PAPAR: Several proposals and approaches concerning issues faced by the local fishing community, who have been fined for encroaching into protected maritime boundary areas, have been submitted to the relevant authorities.
Pantai Manis State Assemblyman Datuk Pengiran Saifuddin Pengiran Tahir Petra said his office has taken note of the matter and previously raised it during the State Legislative Assembly sitting, last year.
He said he had provided clarification to the relevant parties after reviewing the issue and listening to concerns from the fishing community, particularly from Kampung Kuala, here.
“I have engaged with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry Sabah, as well as related agencies, departments and industry players.
“We have raised this issue and it has been duly noted. Therefore, we have proposed several approaches to the ministry, particularly on how to find a solution to the fishermen’s predicament.
“At times, some of them seek shelter from the rain while out at sea. If they are merely taking shelter and not fishing in the prohibited area, action should not be taken against them.
“In fact, the waters near Pulau Tiga are their traditional fishing grounds. However, the area has since been gazetted and we respect the law. Nevertheless, there are occasions when they need to seek shelter there, especially during strong winds and rough seas,” he said.
He was speaking to reporters after officiating at the Pantai Manis Chinese Community Appreciation Ceremony here, on February 11.
Pengiran, who is also Chairman of Sabah Urban Development Corporation Sdn Bhd, urged the relevant authorities to consider refraining from taking action against fishermen who seek shelter in protected waters, particularly within areas managed by Sabah Parks.
“Most of these coastal fishermen live hand-to-mouth.
“They have never used fish bombs that damage coral reefs; instead, they are traditional fishermen who do not threaten marine biodiversity.
“We will continue striving to address this matter, as it is a genuine grievance of the fishing community that deserves attention,” he stressed.
