Kuala Lumpur: The government has approved 401 projects to redevelop dilapidated school buildings in Sabah since 2016 and so far, more than half have been completed.
Ranau Member of Parliament, Datuk Jonathan Yasin said, of the total, 238 projects have been completed, 63 in the construction phase and 100 in the pre-construction phase.

Specifically in the Ranau Parliament, he said, 31 projects to redevelop dilapidated school buildings have been approved. Of the total, 12 projects have been completed, nine projects in the construction phase and 10 projects in the pre-construction phase.
“We are informed that in the context of statistics and data related to schools with dilapidated buildings, it is dynamic and changes according to the current situation.
“The information obtained shows that until December 31, 2025, there are 368 schools in Sabah that have been identified as having dilapidated buildings, which are in the Scale 7 category.
“Of this total, 32 schools in the Ranau Parliament have dilapidated buildings,” he said.
He added that the Ministry of Education (MOE) is committed to implementing a phased approach in overcoming dilapidated schools which includes short-term measures by focusing on maintenance work in identified schools, and for long-term measures, the MOE is planning the implementation of replacement or reconstruction projects for school buildings that are on scale 7.
The information was obtained through the Notice of Questions of the Dewan Rakyat, First Meeting, Fifth Term of the Fifteenth Parliament of 2026 here recently.
In the meeting, Jonathan asked the Minister of Education Malaysia to state the steps that the Ministry would take immediately to resolve the problem of dilapidated schools and unsafe schools throughout Sabah and especially in the Ranau district.
He also asked what further steps the Ministry of Education would take to improve the quality of education in the country.
“Applications for school replacement that meet the criteria will always be submitted in phases to the Ministry of Economy for consideration under the development planning of the Five-Year Malaysia Plan (RMLT).
“In general, the Ministry of Education will ensure that the quality of education continues to be improved, among the efforts implemented by the Ministry are strengthening skilled teaching staff, expanding digital education in educational institutions and improving school physical facilities as well as developing student talents,” he explained.
