Reason for Telupid water woes

TELUPID: Water supply disruptions in this district are not caused by a lack of water sources but weaknesses in the distribution system and reliance on generator sets, according to State Works and Utility Minister Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam.

Following a working visit to several water facilities in Telupid on Tuesday, Dr Joachim said low water pressure occurs because existing distribution pipes do not have sufficient diameter to meet current demand.

“Water is actually sufficient, but the distribution system is the problem. The pipe diameter needs to be increased so that water pressure reaches homes and premises at appropriate levels,” he told a press conference during the visit.

He said that water treatment plant operations are overly dependent on generator sets, causing inconsistent supply, particularly when diesel supply is disrupted or road access is cut off.

Kota Kinabalu: KOTA KINABALU: Fiesta Mega Raya (FMR) 2026 is set to be the largest and most prestigious Hari Raya celebration in Sabah, taking place from March 7 to 18, at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), here.
In response, his Ministry will discuss with Sabah Electricity the possibility of connecting directly to the existing electrical grid located approximately four kilometres from the plant area.

“In the long term, connection to the grid is cheaper and more stable compared to the maintenance costs of generator sets,” Dr Joachim said, adding that all technical proposals would be reviewed and evaluated before implementation.

He said further discussions with relevant agencies would be held to detail cost estimates and identify the best methods to resolve water supply problems in the area fully.

“We will try to resolve all identified issues so that the people receive a more consistent and quality water supply,” he said.
