TAWAU: Repeated fires destroying homes in squatter settlements in Apas have highlighted the need for sustained government attention and more effective housing solutions, said Sabah Youth, Sports and Creative Economy Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan.
Speaking during aid distribution to 350 fire victims at a temporary shelter in Tawau, Nizam urged authorities to reorganise high-risk settlements and expand public housing.

He said state housing initiatives under Sabah Maju Jaya have already helped relocate many squatters to safer areas.
Victims of the recent Kg Titingan fire have been granted an extended stay at the shelter, while authorities advised stricter compliance with building safety rules, especially electrical connections and house spacing.
Nizam said affected families may apply for housing assistance, subject to eligibility review, and thanked agencies and NGOs for supporting relief efforts.
