KOTA KINABALU: Sabah holds a significant position in EU–Malaysia relations, reflecting its strategic role in Southeast Asia and potential in economics, sustainable development and international cooperation, said European Union Ambassador to Malaysia Rafael Daerr.
He said this during a courtesy call on Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor at Menara Kinabalu on Thursday, where he also reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to further strengthening ties with Sabah.
Hajiji said the State Government remains open to international cooperation that aligns with Sabah’s development direction and delivers long-term benefits to the people, particularly in accelerating the state’s development agenda.
Hajiji and Daerr exchanged views on potential future cooperation, including continuing existing engagements and exploring new, strategic and high-impact opportunities in line with Sabah’s priorities and the EU’s mutual interests.
Earlier, Daerr attended the launch of the Sabah Timber Legality Assurance System Plus (Sabah TLAS+) booklet, described as the first system globally to integrate legal requirements, deforestation-free standards under the European Union Deforestation Regulation and voluntary sustainability principles within a single framework.
