Sabah’s own Troll tale
Sikinor shows one of the stones, planted at a height of one metre, believed to mark the burial of Tulohong in Kg Namadan, Kiulu.
TAMPARULI: The global success of the fantasy adventure film “Troll” has reawakened interest in ancient legends of giant beings believed to have once walked the earth.

Long before the Norwegian tale reached cinema screens, Sabah had its own story of a towering warrior known as Tulohong.

First released in 2022, with a sequel following in 2025, “Troll” tells the story of an ancient giant accidentally awakened by an explosion in the mountains of Norway, a creature once dismissed as mere folklore.

For some communities in Sabah, the idea of a giant protector is not confined to the big screen, but lives on in oral history passed down through generations, particularly in Kiulu and Tamparuli, where the legend of Tulohong continues to be told.
