SANDAKAN: The lack of clear no-smoking signage and the failure to provide designated smoking areas at Sandakan Airport have sparked complaints among tourists and members of the public.
Former Karamunting assemblyman, Datuk George Hiew Vun Zin said he has received numerous complaints regarding enforcement actions taken against individuals who were smoking in outdoor areas of the airport, particularly along the arrival walkway.

According to him, the main issue stems from the absence of clear and visible no-smoking signs, as well as the lack of detailed markings indicating areas where smoking is permitted.
He said the situation has not only caused dissatisfaction but is also feared to have a negative impact on the image of Sandakan and Sabah as tourism destinations.
“In several locations, especially along the main arrival routes and outdoor areas, there are insufficient indicators. Tourists who have just arrived find it difficult to understand the existing regulations and end up violating the ban unintentionally,” he said.
George added that imposing fines immediately under such circumstances could be considered unfair, as the offence results from confusion rather than deliberate non-compliance.
In response, he held a meeting with Sandakan Airport officer Mohamad Nazri and Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) Health Counsellor Nicholas Choong to discuss the need for clearer no-smoking signage and the provision of designated smoking areas.
He proposed that the authorities promptly install more no-smoking signs at strategic locations, while clearly outlining prohibited areas and permitted smoking zones to ensure they are easily understood by visitors.
“If clear signage has been displayed and violations still occur, enforcement action would be justified. However, when visitors are not adequately informed, a verbal warning should be prioritised,” he said.
George also stressed that ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026, all relevant parties must be more attentive to tourists’ initial experiences upon arriving in the state.
He noted that airports serve as the main gateway for visitors, and any negative experience at this early stage could significantly affect their overall perception of Sandakan and Sabah.
