Inter-state power grids bolster energy security

Kota Kinabalu: Inter-state cooperation serves as a powerful catalyst for regional stability, delivering tangible benefits to consumers by lowering the risk of outages, optimising resource sharing and stabilising utility costs through shared infrastructure.

By linking power grids, the National Consumers Foundation Malaysia (YPNM) Sabah Chapter believes the states can mitigate local energy deficits and leverage surplus capacity from neighbour’s, ensuring that households and businesses enjoy an uninterrupted supply of electricity.

This collaborative model not only enhances the quality of life for the average citizens but also creates a more resilient economic environment capable of attracting high-value industrial investments, YPNM Sabah Chairman David Chan said.

The chapter lauded Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor for the State’s proactive leadership in launching the Sabah-Sarawak power interconnection project.

David noted that the early intervention reflects a strategic commitment to solving long-standing energy security issues.

“The project is specifically designed to bolster the reliability of the Sabah Southern Grid, providing a much-needed safety net for both domestic consumers and heavy industries.”

A key component of this success, David said, is the 50-megawatt (MW) supply of electricity from the Sarawak grid, a gesture of goodwill facilitated by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Datuk Abang Openg.

He said the 50MW injection is vital for maintaining grid frequency and stability across the border.

David also credited the seamless implementation of the project to the professional coordination between Sabah Electricity, led by CEO Datuk Mohd Yaakob, and the technical teams at Sarawak Energy, whose teamwork ensured the complex engineering requirements of the interconnection were met.

Beyond the immediate technical advantages, YPNM believes the interconnection is a strategic pillar for the broader “Borneo Agenda.

It fosters closer social ties and deeper economic integration between the two states. By aligning their energy policies, Sabah and Sarawak are paving the way for future joint ventures in:
  • Renewable Energy Development: Sharing expertise in hydroelectric and solar potential.
  • Oil and Gas: Coordinating downstream activities to maximise value for local citizens.
  • Sustainable Development: Building a unified East Malaysian economy that can compete on a global scale.

The Sabah–Sarawak interconnection stands as a landmark example of how regional partnerships can transcend administrative boundaries to deliver essential services.

As the project stabilises the grid, it sets a precedent for future collaborations that prioritise the welfare of the people, ensuring that the lights stay on and the economy continues to grow through shared prosperity.
