KOTA KINABALU: Concerns have been raised over the condition of public toilets at Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA), particularly at the domestic arrival area, after complaints that newly completed facilities are already experiencing operational problems.
Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Public Complaint Bureau chief Chin Vun Pheaw said issues such as blockages and usability failures surfaced shortly after completion, raising questions over workmanship standards, supervision and overall airport management.

He said public toilets are among the first facilities used by arriving passengers and therefore immediately reflect service standards at one of Sabah’s most important gateways, adding that the problems were not due to age or wear and tear but how the work was carried out and supervised.
Chin’s remarks come amid repeated public announcements by Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook on federal funding and plans to upgrade airports nationwide, including the Federal Cabinet’s approval in November 2024 of a RM442.3 million upgrade for KKIA targeted for completion around 2027, followed by the October 2025 announcement of RM2.3 billion allocated under the federal budget for airport upgrades nationwide, including KKIA.
While acknowledging these policy commitments, Chin questioned the level of oversight by the Transport Ministry and airport management to ensure acceptable standards on the ground, stressing that failures in newly completed basic facilities, prolonged rectification works and weak accountability undermine public confidence and tourism efforts, especially during the Year of Tourism.
