Families from across Sabah and Singapore gathered to honour relatives who fought against the Japanese, with some, particularly Chinese families, arriving as early as 5am to burn joss paper and offer prayers before the official programme.

A group of Bajau Ubian families have begun seeking official recognition by compiling their own family records spanning six generations and covering 10 victims.
