KOTA KINABALU: The annual Petagas memorial service was held here on Wednesday to honour those who lost their lives defending Sabah against the Japanese forces during World War II on Jan 21, 1944.
Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam, representing Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, led the ceremony at 8.30am.

Families from across Sabah and Singapore gathered to honour relatives who fought against the Japanese, with some, particularly Chinese families, arriving as early as 5am to burn joss paper and offer prayers before the official programme.
A group of Bajau Ubian families have begun seeking official recognition by compiling their own family records spanning six generations and covering 10 victims.
