Kota Kinabalu: Motorists using the road leading to Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and the Tuaran bypass are raising alarms over its worsening condition, calling it a “death trap” for drivers and motorcyclists alike.
Residents say the roadside has sunk and warped badly, putting vehicles at risk of damage. Cars passing through the area often suffer broken suspensions or punctured tires, while motorcyclists face even greater danger, particularly in rainy weather when visibility is reduced.

Retiree Paul Lajumin noted that the entire stretch was resealed just five to six months ago, but within three weeks, potholes reappeared and the road surface began to degrade.
He attributed the poor condition to shoddy repairs, as well as ongoing work by other agencies, such as pipe repairs and cable laying, which were not properly followed up with adequate road restoration.
“The repair was poorly done. Now, cars are swerving into the opposite lane to avoid the damaged section, causing near misses. During rain, the situation worsens.
Motorcycles are hard to spot, which creates a serious danger for both two-wheelers and cars,” said Paul.
Residents are concerned that, without immediate intervention, the road will continue to deteriorate, leading to more hazards and increased traffic congestion.
They are urging authorities to carry out permanent, high-quality repairs rather than temporary fixes to ensure the safety of all road users.
In an effort to raise awareness, Paul even took to Facebook, hoping to catch the attention of the relevant authorities before more lives are lost or vehicles suffer further damage.
