Tawau man arrested for hitting wife over phone
Jasmin said the incident caused the suspect’s wife to sustain injuries to her face and the back of her head. 
TAWAU: Police arrested a 44-year-old local suspected of assaulting his wife by hitting her head during a dispute over a mobile phone at a house in Kampung Rancangan Batu 22, Jalan Apas, on Wednesday.

Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the suspect was detained in an operation conducted by a team from the District Criminal Investigation Department.

“Based on the victim’s complaint, the couple initially argued over the same mobile phone before the suspect, unable to control his anger, proceeded to hit his wife,” he said, Thursday.

Jasmin said the incident caused the suspect’s wife to sustain injuries to her face and the back of her head.

A background check revealed the suspect has a prior criminal record, having been previously convicted for drug abuse under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

“The suspect has been brought to the police station for further investigation under Section 323 of the Penal Code and Section 18A of the Domestic Violence Act 1994,” Jasmin said.

In a separate case, police arrested a 29-year-old local lorry driver on suspicion of threatening and assaulting a woman at Felda Umas 4, Kalabakan.

Jasmin said the suspect was apprehended after being tracked down at Tawau Airport by a team that had mobilised efforts to locate and arrest the man.

“The suspect is believed to have acted aggressively by punching and kicking his victim, and also threatened to beat the woman if she refused to hand over a sum of money to him,” he said.

Police brought the suspect to the police station for further action under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation and Section 323 of the same code for voluntarily causing hurt.
