KOTA MARUDU: Efforts to rebuild and restore basic access in Kampung Sungoi are being prioritised after flash floods caused severe damage, prompting Kota Marudu MP Datuk Wetrom Bahanda to inspect the area, deliver immediate aid and plan short- and long-term solutions.
He said the collapse of roads and a bridge linking Kampung Sungoi Laut and Kampung Sungoi Darat had cut off access for more than 200 residents, affecting daily travel to town, clinics and schools.

Wetrom said the situation required urgent attention and that a new application would be submitted to the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development to address the damaged infrastructure.
He estimated about RM1 million would be needed to repair the road and construct a new bridge, noting that previous funding for the road had also come under the same ministry but fresh approval was now required due to the extent of damage.
During his visit on Wednesday, Wetrom said any rebuilt bridge must be stronger than the previous structure and added that while floods may not be fully preventable, better river management and mitigation measures could help reduce their impact on villagers.
