Man dies in Beluran crash

BELURAN: A man was killed while five others were injured in an accident involving a Toyota Hilux and a Toyota Unser along Jalan Telisai Sapi Nangoh.

Beluran Fire and Rescue Station chief PPgB Edoen Macheal said his department received an emergency call at 12.57pm and dispatched a fire engine to the scene, located about 45km away.

Six victims were involved. “Four occupants of the Toyota Hilux, comprising two adults and two children, sustained minor injuries and were reported to be in stable condition,” he said.

He said the Toyota Unser was carrying two adults — a man and a woman.

“The male victim was confirmed dead at the scene by the Ministry of Health medical team and his body was handed over to the police,” he said.

The female victim sustained injuries and was taken to Beluran Hospital by a Health Ministry ambulance for further treatment.

Firefighters arrived at the scene at 1.38pm and carried out safety operations to secure the area.

In RANAU, a 10-tonne lorry plunged into a river when an old bridge collapsed, near here, Tuesday afternoon.

The incident happened in Kg Kawiyan Ranau, about two hours from Pekan Ranau. Both the driver and assistant escaped without any serious injury.

Nevertheless, netizens criticised the decision of the driver to cross the old semi wooden and steel bridge.

The bridge was built for villagers to travel back and forth to their respective destinations, but they are now was cut off following the incident.

The damaged bridge was meant for only light and small vehicles, and those hauling heavy loads are not supposed to use it.

Thus far, the relevant authority as well as rescuers were not contacted to take action or respond on the incident.

In KOTA KINABALU, a 32-year-old motorcyclist sustained bodily and facial injuries after his vehicle plunged into a drain following a crash near the Karamunsing junction, here, Tuesday.

The accident happened at 2.40 pm opposite the old Karamunsing radio station when the motorcyclist, believed to be travelling from Likas, lost control of his vehicle.

It hit the iron railings before plunging into the drain. Emergency services responded to the scene and the injured motorcyclist was subsequently transported to the hospital by ambulance for medical treatment.
