SANDAKAN: Construction work at a development site in Batu 2, near the Petronas petrol station, has been criticised for posing serious safety risks to nearby residents and road users.
Elopura Assemblyman Calvin Chong, who inspected the site, found that the developer was transporting sediment and construction materials onto the public road without proper cleaning measures.
This has led to thick mud covering the road, making it difficult for vehicles to pass and increasing the risk of accidents.
The situation has also caused severe blockages in the drainage system, raising concerns about potential flash floods during heavy rain.
“This situation clearly reflects the irresponsible attitude of the developer, who seems to prioritize profit over the safety and well-being of the community,” said Chong.
He called for immediate action by local authorities and the developer to clean the roads, repair the drainage system, and ensure public safety.
Chong also warned of long-term environmental impacts, such as water pollution from sediment flowing into drainage channels.
He urged the developer to install wheel-washing facilities, cover exposed soil areas, and ensure the construction site meets safety and environmental standards.
“The safety of the people must come first. Development cannot proceed recklessly at the expense of residents’ daily lives. I will continue to monitor this issue and demand action if it’s not resolved promptly,” he said.
